We all know that a stiff maple deck has the best pop; however the amount of pop your board exhibits depends upon the interaction with the riding surface. Skating on a hard marble surface = incredible pop while the same deck on a rough concrete riding surface = dead pop. The reason why boards quickly lose their pop is due to friction. For years skateboarding companies have claimed that pop is all about board stiffness and that the reason why boards lose their pop is because they have become soft and flexible. This is a myth and in reality a ruse to get riders to buy a new deck. Pop loss has little to do with board stiffness; research has shown that decks actually get better when they are broken in. The reason why boards lose their pop is due to fragile quick wearing wooden tips, which generate higher levels of friction with each Ollie executed. Friction steals your pop.Skateboarding is about physics. The amount of pop depends upon the amount of energy that enters your deck. Consider riding on smooth marble vs. rough concrete. Now consider the impact and pop you get with a new deck vs. the pop your board exhibits when the tips of your deck are worn and razortailed. Worn tips = mad friction = dead pop. Skateboard pop depends on the material and condition of the deck tips. It’s the tips of your skateboard where pop begins. The sweet spot of the deck and the focal point where the energy from the impact and interaction between the tip and the riding surface enters your deck, creating the pop you need for every trick. A new deck has the best pop because new tips offer the smallest possible footprint or area of contact with the riding surface. Friction is minimized because only a small area of the tip impacts the riding surface. Thus when your tips are new, maximum pop is achieved and as your tips wear down, the deck’s performance (and yours) declines dramatically. This is why pro riders replace their decks every few days. The tips of traditional Wooden Decks begin to lose their pop immediately. When you drag wood on asphalt, wood loses. Every Ollie damages your deck, reducing pop. The tips are only “part” of the deck that you actually use, with wooden tip decks, the more you skate, the worse you skate, and the more often you need a new deck. |
